A car key rarely fails without warning. Catching the signs early can save you from a lockout, a no-start, or an expensive all-keys-lost call. Here are five things to watch for.
1. The key sticks or hesitates in the ignition
If you have to wiggle the key to turn it, the blade may be worn or the ignition may be wearing out. A worn key can also wear the ignition faster, so address it early.
2. The key blade looks rounded or bent
Look closely at the cuts on the blade. If the edges look smooth, rounded, or bent, the key may not be reading the lock cleanly. A copy made from a worn key will inherit that wear, so it is better to cut a fresh key from the code.
3. The case is cracked or the buttons are failing
A cracked fob shell lets in dust and moisture and can loosen the circuit board. Buttons that need extra pressure are another early sign.
4. The remote only works up close
Reduced range often points to a weak battery, but if a new battery does not help, the fob electronics may be failing.
5. The car sometimes does not recognize the key
Intermittent no-start, a flashing key or security light, or a push-to-start that sometimes will not detect the fob can signal a failing chip or fob. Try your spare to see whether the problem follows the key.
What to do next
If you notice any of these signs, have a spare made now while you still have a working key. It is usually simpler and less costly than starting from scratch after every key is lost.
